Christian Fischer represented the ETC/SCP and the EEA at the second international Japanese workshop on 3R (Reuse, Recycling and Recovery) and waste management. The workshop was held in Kitakyushu, Japan on 21-23 September 2011 and arranged and paid by Kyoto University.  The aim was having discussions through comparison of reports presented on the management of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and household hazardous waste (HHW) in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe. 19 experts were invited. The discussion points can be summarized as follows: (1) the overall trend in 3R and waste management, (2) measures concerning the collection of E-waste and HHW, and (3) the effective utilization of resources and the sound control of hazardous substances.

Christian Fischer gave a presentation that focused on hazardous waste management in the EU, transboundary shipments of hazardous waste in the EU, the EU policies on WEEE and the current weaknesses, and the critical metals in WEEE. The results of the workshop will later be presented at the Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management.
